On the Twenty Third Day of Christmas

23rd  December:

On the Edge in India

After initial research, In 2014 Children on the Edge will be beginning new work in the State of Bihar, India helping to educate the children of the lowest caste of people in this area.

This caste is seen as the lowest of the low and condemned to the very bottom of the social pile. The caste live in extremely poor conditions surrounded by filth and surviving on a diet of rats. Children show serious signs of malnourishment are overlooked and often abused.

With no opportunity for learning, the girls are severely vulnerable to trafficking, a fate the organisation wants to prevent by providing an education.

Bid for our ISAK advent package now to support this valuable work.

On the Twenty Second Day of Christmas

-->
22ndth December:

Sowetos mini graduates

A year after the Soweto Child Friendly Space in Jinja, Uganda was set up; they celebrated their first ‘Graduation Day’! The eldest group of children are now leaving to start primary school after completing their early years education at the Centre.

This would not have been possible a year ago, but with the provision of early childhood learning, the Centre staff liaising with local schools to make places available and the building of relationships with parents in order to promote the value of education for children, this milestone has been reached.

Matilda, a teacher at the Child Friendly Space says; “ I love working with the children. They are the future adults of tomorrow and future politictians. Developing them at this early age will help them to change. I just love it.”

Today is the last day of the Week 3 Isak Advent Auction. All the money bid from you wonderful people will go directly to Children on the Edge. Help us to help the charity to help these children. Please visit our ebay link and place your bid.

Are you just flesh & bone?

"A chair is just a chair. I will sit and stare at walls my whole life. I am just flesh & bone. The world is just a rock.
Sometimes you have to wrap yourself in the beauty of the mundane. Everyday must be surrounded in wonder and beauty."

We look at our world and add beautiful happy things. We hope you enjoy them.

On the Twenty First Day of Christmas

-->
21st December: Staying on the Edge

With Children on the Edge, it’s all in the name. The organisation focuses on children leading forgotten lives in barren, dangerous places. Those without parental care, neglected or persecuted by their governments, ignored by international media and out of reach for large overseas agencies.

As a smaller organisation we can often get to places that others can’t reach and tread the path less trodden. This is why they are currently researching opportunities in North Korea.

After a visit to Rason City and North Hamhyong Province by their director and Asia Regional Manager, the charity has connected with some local partners who reach more than 5,500 children in dire need in one of the world’s most isolated and impoverished countries.

in response to the widespread famine in North Korea and in a country which thrives on secrecy, these partners have slowly forged relationships and built trust with key officials and teachers. As a result, they have access into parts of the country, which were previously considered unreachable by any international organisation, and Children on the Edge are planning a strategy of support for 2014.

Watch this space!

20th December: Children get green fingered in Thailand

To provide food for the Children’s Crisis Centre supported by Children on the Edge, nearby there is a kitchen garden which helps the project to be self sustaining. Not only this, but the garden is a fantastic opportunity for the refugee children from the Centre who visit on a weekly basis and use the experience to learn about responsibility, nutrition and basic agricultural skills. Each year the staff and the children get agricultural training where they can learn about the land in their area and how to get the best out of it.

The children love the garden trips and so far have planted and harvested some great crops of aubergines, chillies, tomatoes and pumpkins!

On the Eighteenth Day of Christmas

18th December: King for a day

When these three came to the Children on the Edge Centre in Uganda they introduced themselves as Moses, Isaac and ‘boy’. ‘Boy’ is seen here wearing the crown. A serious amount of the children who arrive at the Centre come with no name. In Soweto it’s common for children to have lost their parents and live with grandparents who are so overwhelmed that they soon forget names.

The first thing the Centre staff do is find out names and work on developing the children’s sense of identity. The ‘boy’ here in the photo wearing a crown which he made on this year’s summer playscheme, just one of the creative ways that the project encourages creativity and builds self esteem.

The boy’s name is Joseph.

On the Seventeenth Day of Christmas

17th December: Football camp!

This two day football camp in Thailand aimed to provide refugee and migrant children, without parental care, to have a memorable experience during their holidays.

“We usually play on a dirt field with many cows around,” remarked Than Lyun age 16. “We have never been able to play on a real field, with real shoes, and be trained by a professional … it’s been great.”  As about a third of the participating children owned only sandals, Children on the Edge was able to provide a pair of athletic shoes for many of the kids.

As the camp came to a close, the focus was already being turned to the next time. Yiyi Win (Children’s Crisis Centre Manger) said “This event has definitely been the highlight of their break. They already want to know when we can do it again. These kids are crazy about football!”

On the Sixteenth Day of Christmas

16th December: ‘Grow your own’

As the brewery in Soweto slum pumps acrid smoke into the air and creates a stream of toxic sludge running between the huts where children play, a mother working here holds back her toddler from the edge of the slurry pit.

Soweto’s dependence on alcohol brewing not only results in children being exposed to toxins, neglect due to intoxication of parents, and the dangers of predatory inebriated men, but it is a primary cause of malnutrion. Children are fed the dregs of the brewery, and all the while the community invests in alcohol, they are not growing the food they desperately need.

The project here, supported by Children on the Edge, has created durable alternative to this in the form of agricultural training and inputs. The community now has a burgeoning farm area where local people are gaining skills, and growing food for the Centre and to take home for their families.

Thank you! The Week 2 of Advent Isak Charity Auction raised £120 for Children on the Edge. A happy highest bidder will receive a package containing at least £200 worth of Isak products and Children on the Edge will automatically receive all £120 directly.

On The Fifteenth Day of Christmas

15th December: Education for everyone

Saida is 18 years old. Before she took up a teaching post at one of the 30 Children on the Edge refugee camp schools in Bangladesh, she had no livelihood and little standing in the community. Since starting with them she has received regular teacher training and is now starting to train other women too. Her standing in the community is increased and her voice is respected in her family. She is now listened to in making decisions about her children and has her own income.

This is the case for around 30 teachers who have joined this teaching programme in the camps.

Thank you! The Week 2 of Advent Isak Charity Auction raised £120 for Children on the Edge. A happy highest bidder will receive a package containing at least £200 worth of Isak products and Children on the Edge will automatically receive all £120 directly.

On the Fourteenth Day of Christmas

Education is priceless

During initial research done by Children on the Edge for their project with the Rohingya refugee community on the border of Bangladesh and Burma, the people in the camps described how above anything else they wanted education for their children.

Since its inception the programme has grown and expanded, effectively preventing an entrire generation of Rohingya children from growing up completely unable to read and write. This is an investment into their future, but the charity has also found it’s influencing the present.

-       Children are healthier
This is not only because they are coming to school instead of playing in the open sewers running through the camp, but because they can now read about health clinic times and places and makes sure their whole family can access healthcare.

-       Literacy is also broadening their horizons.
Children describe how they are starting to read the scraps of newspaper that market food is wrapped in and learning about what is going on outside what is effectively a prison camp.

Just £10 can buy a blackboard for a class in Bangladesh

Please take the time to view our charity auction on ebay. 100% goes automatically to Children on the Edge.
Thanks
